How to join the Subnautica 2 Experimental Branch
What Experimental actually is
The Experimental Branch is an opt-in preview channel. Unknown Worlds uses it to test upcoming fixes and content before the changes reach the main Early Access build. That makes it useful for players who want to help find problems, but it is not the safest place for a long-running save you care about.
Decide before you switch
Ask whether you want stability or early testing. If your goal is simply to play the newest public build, the main Early Access channel is the right choice and the update tracker shows the latest official release. If you want to report issues or check preview behavior, Experimental is appropriate, but treat every result as preview-only.
Join on Steam
- Open your Steam library and right-click Subnautica 2.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Game Versions & Betas tab.
- Under Beta participation, select the Experimental branch.
- Close the window and let Steam download the preview build. Steam's wording matters: this is a deliberate beta choice, not a required step after buying the game. If the option is missing, check that you own the correct product and that your Steam client is current before assuming the preview is closed.
Join on Xbox
- Install the free Xbox Insider Hub app on your Xbox console or PC.
- Sign in with the account that owns the game or has the eligible subscription.
- Open Previews.
- Select Subnautica 2 Experimental (Public Test) and choose Join.
- Wait for registration, then follow the installation prompts and restart if the console requests it. The official announcement says Xbox Insider participants must be 18 or older and must own Subnautica 2 or have an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription. Regional store state, account type, or program capacity can still affect what a specific account sees.
Save and stability boundaries
Officially, saves are stored separately and are not compatible between Experimental and the main branch. You cannot import or export a save between channels. Experimental builds are also more likely to contain game-breaking bugs, and the developer cautions players not to become attached to preview saves.
| Boundary | What it means for your play session |
|---|---|
| Main save | Do not rely on it while testing |
| Experimental save | Expect change, resets, or breakage |
| Bug reports | Record the preview build and reproduction steps |
| Decisions | Do not generalize preview behavior to the stable branch |
When to stay on the main branch
Stay on the main Early Access build if you are playing a campaign with friends, protecting a base you like, or comparing performance. A preview result can be misleading because the code has not finished its wider rollout. Before performance claims, use the system requirements guide and note the exact version, settings, hardware, and driver. For co-op plans, confirm everyone is on the same intended channel with the multiplayer guide.
Evidence boundary
This page follows the official Experimental Branch announcement captured on September 16, 2026. It does not claim that every storefront, region, family account, or Game Pass entitlement has been tested. If Xbox Insider or Steam changes the flow, refresh the official source before changing these steps.
Common search questions
Is Subnautica 2 Experimental free?
It is an opt-in channel for the existing game rather than a separate purchase. The Xbox path may require ownership or an active eligible Game Pass Ultimate subscription.
Can I use my main save on Experimental?
No. The official announcement says saves are stored separately and are not compatible for import or export.
Is Experimental safe?
It is safe to opt in at the account level, but not safe to depend on for progress. Experimental builds can contain serious bugs and preview saves may change.
How do I leave Experimental?
The official article does not give one universal unenroll path, so use the same platform channel settings you used to join, then verify the installed version before continuing a main save.
